Interesting! The flying sparks and the typical "indian hut fire" cought my eye. I also love the contrast in the royal blue night skies and the yellow and amber of the fire reflected on the sparks and people in the background. As a keen kite surfer, you might also like the scenery around Langebaan Lagoon on the West Coast of South Africa. I will soon post some photos that I took from the beach there. The New Years Eve celebrations provide an excellent opportunity for photographing fireworks on the Lagoon beach, even though I hate what it does to animals both domestic and wild (from the West Coast National Park across the Lagoon). On top of that is late August to the first week in September the flowering season of the wild flowers in the West Coast which provides spectacular scenery AND windy conditions that proves to be excellent for kite surfing. Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in place called Svencele, Lithuania. It's very popular among kite boarders, and as I kite myself, It's very close to my heart and I've spent last 5 summers down there working as a kite boarding instructor.

Time

I took the photo on June 23th around 10PM, Here in Lithuania we have a celebration called "Jonines" and it represents the June solstice or the Midsummer, when the day is the longest and night is the shortest, so it was a good opportunity to shoot low light and show how we celebrate it.

Lighting

As the main light source was the fire and I wanted to show the trails of the sparks, I was trying out different settings and finally I set my shutter to 30/1 to create a beautiful trail of the sparks and overall atmosphere.

Equipment

I used Nikon D7000, Nikkor lens 24-85mm 2.8-4f and a cheap Cullman tripod.

Inspiration

I wanted to show one part of the Summer solstice celebration which is the bonfire. After the bonfire collapses we actually jump over it and we have all different kinds of traditions regarding "Jonines".

Editing

I try to do as little editing as possible. In this particular photo I wanted to highlight the trails so I have used small amount of colour corrections, contrast, sharpness, saturation and etc.

In my camera bag

My favourite lens is Tokina 11-16mm 2.8f, I shoot most of my landscapes and action shots with it. Another lens I have is an old school Nikkor 43-86mm 3.5f, surprisingly it has quite good optical capabilities and shoots nicely, although the focus range is weird. The body that I use is Nikon D7000. For the action shots I always have 2 speed lights and wireless triggers in my bag.

Feedback

My advice is quite simple just get out and shoot, by taking photos, experimenting, taking calculated risks (I went into the spark trail to get the photo, just few burned holes in clothes) you will eventually get better and take amazing photos. Don't beat yourself up if you didn't take that perfect shot, don't be afraid of failing and show your photos to everybody, gather opinions and evaluate on how you can improve. P.s It will be a good motivation for me as well, as I from time to time stagnate and don't take photos for a long time.
