This is a combination of many images, merged together to create my final vision. Simple composition was key.

Behind The Lens

Location

It was taken on my son's 5th birthday, in our dining room.

Time

It was around 7pm.

Lighting

I turned off every single light in the house and metered off the candlelight.

Equipment

Canon 5D mkiii, Sigma 35mm Art. No flash, no tripod.

Inspiration

My eldest son (11 years old)has a terminal disease, so I take as many photos as I can of all 4 of my children. I want to create visual memories of their lives, and birthdays are some of the most important moments as a year is a long time in our lives.

Editing

Yes, I bring up the profile in LR and reduce the candlelight highlights. I darken any shadows and shapes behind my shadow, although usually I don't need to do much as it looks pretty good SOOC. I finish in PS to make my image pop and increase colours, and use Imagenomic to reduce noise.

In my camera bag

My 5Dmkiii, Sigma 35mm Art, and Tamron 70-200. The pretty much go everywhere with me. My bag is pretty big!!!!

Feedback

Turn off all the lights, clear the background, position with very few distractions behind. Meter exposure off the candlelight, and bring up the profile in LR.
