Location
This image was taken on land adjacent to my house in the Endless Mountains of PennsylvaniaTime
This was early morning as the fog was liftingLighting
At this time of day light tends to be very flat in early morning as the sun begins to burn off the fog, very soft light that works well for particular subjectsEquipment
Photo taken with a Nikon D5100, mid-range zoom...no tripod since it was an unexpected happeningInspiration
The deer tend to come around for breakfast and dinner on a fairly regular basis, so the big question is weather, especially early morning. I always have a camera ready near the front door. The magic is all about quality of lightEditing
Every image from the camera is tweaked a bit...first, a crop. My rule is to shoot a bit loose. Then composition can be adjusted and tightened. If the crop is too tight, no adjustment can be made. For those who don't have software, I recommend cropping variations of your subject tighter and looser and also placing the subject in various positions in the composition. After the download, artistic choices can be made---software or notIn my camera bag
Equipment changes based on the goal for the day or situation, always two cameras, three or four lenses, and the miscellaneous, especially back up batteriesFeedback
For shooting nature, everything depends on time of day and weather...the "golden rule": from sunrise and a couple of hours before sunset. Also consider "bad" weather days an opportunity for a special take on subjects everyone else shoots in the sunshine
