Location
This image was taken along the Mississippi River during the winter months.Time
Nothing beats late afternoon sun on a cold winter day. Not only does it provide some warmth on a day with negative windchill, but it gives the most beautiful light.Lighting
This was all-natural later after noon sun. The wind was blowing from the perfect direction to give me this angle on the bird as he flew into the wind and light.Equipment
This image was taken with my old, but trusty, Canon 7d paired with my Canon 400mm f/5.6L lens. I love this rig because I can hand hold it and still get great images.Inspiration
I'm a nature/wildlife lover and what greater icon is there to represent nature and freedom than the American Bald Eagle.Editing
Yes, I shoot all of my images in RAW format, which usually needs some post processing, since the image is left unchanged by the camera. For this image I did crop to put the bird in the most flattering location near the top of the image. Also, with bald eagles, it is a challenge to properly expose the whites along with the dark areas of their wings. Shooting in RAW format and bringing out the shadows a little bit is very helpful. In my camera bag
Right now if you were to look in my bag you would find my Canon 7D, Canon 70-200 f/4L, Canon 400mm f/5.6L, Canon 24-70 f/2.8L, Canon 100mm f/2.8L, Canon 10-55mm, Canon 50mm f/1.8, extra batteries, memory cards, and some filters.Feedback
Practice, practice, practice. I know that sounds cliche' but shooting birds in flight is very challenging. If you can spend some time at a backyard bird feeder photographing smaller birds and striving to get sharp, well-focused birds in flight, that will help you as you hone your skills for these majestic bald eagles. Also, the Mississippi River during the winter months can be a great place to find eagles, especially at the lock and dams up and down the river.
