Great Shot! I've been on that Pier many times :) I live in Louisiana but still have family in California. My Aunt lives in Escondido, I lived there many years ago.

Wow so beautiful! This almost reminds me of a pier down in Southern California, around Santa Cruz. I love the way the lights contrast with the dark colors of the sky. I like how the lights look like they are popping. Very cool

Location
This photo was taken at the pier in Oceanside, California. As you can see it was just past dusk and the setting was perfect to capture the lights reflecting into the waterTime
A group of us had met at the pier around 7 pm Pacific Time and we headed for the sand and surf to capture the California sunset. As the sun had set, I was watching the lights beginning to glow on the water, and decided it would be a good time to shootLighting
This was a long exposure shot. I did not use a flash, that would have ruined the atmosphere of the setting.Equipment
Because I was actually standing in the surf, I knew I would need to have a tripod. I set the camera up, placed the tripod into the sand, with the water lapping at the legs of all, I kept my hand on the tripod in case of a large surge coming in, and I used my remote shutter release so I didn't have to release the tripod.Inspiration
The lights of the pier reflecting into the water, and the gently lapping of the surf seemed to be 'picture perfect'Editing

Survey the area you want to shoot, see if you need to have any particular concerns (surf surging and knocking over tripod), position your camera, set your ISO, and snap away.
