Location
San Diego zoo, polar bear exhibit.Time
This was taken just before noon in the winter months.Lighting
All natural light with the sun near zenith, but in the winter months, so it is lower in the sky.Equipment
Olympus C2000Z point and shoot camera. ISO100, f4.5, 1/650th of a second.Inspiration
Was just sitting observing the bears and at first they weren't doing too much in the way of interesting things. After about an hour wait, the pair of bears got up and decided it was play time. Once in the water and they began to become active, the water became quite agitated, both above and below the surface. Luckily the viewing area provides an excellent way to observe both below and above the water.Editing
Very minor post processing. Cropped the photo to achieve balance in elements, a slight brightening overall with a touch of fill for the dark foreground areas. In my camera bag
Toady I normally carry a Canon 40D with an assortment of simple lenses. Lenses in the bag range from 17mm to 300mm. Also I still carry the Olympus C2000Z, it provides a spur of the moment abilities for quick fleeting shots.Feedback
Patience, forethought. For this particular situation I had to wait well over an hour for anything of interest to happen. Then once it began, the action is fleeting, animals do as they please and aren't really into your photo opportunities. Thing is, if you watch them for a few minutes, you will generally see a pattern form to their movements. In this case the bears would dive below the surface, recover a toy they had, then resurface after following the glass wall along the same path. Prior planning and being aware where this bear would more than likely be, provided the shot.
