Behind The Lens

Location

This was from a shoot at Wraysbury near Heathrow airport, London.

Time

It was almost a quarter past 3 in the afternoon by the time we got to this tree. Silver (the wonderful model) and I had been shoot all day.

Lighting

It was quite a dull, overcast day as the storms had only just started subsiding. We had planned this shoot for a while and a few days before our shoot date, the whole place suffered heavy floods. We wondered if we could even get to the location. So I didn't take any tripod mounted lights, all I had with me was my Canon speedlight and my wonderful Roundflash(tm) portable softbox thingummy-wotsit( which I still love).

Equipment

My gear on this shoot was my canon 70D, Canon 430 ex flash and as I said earlier, my trusty Roundflash softbox. Oh and Silver my model, does she count? Well she was one of the most important pieces of equipment I needed for the shoot ;0)

Inspiration

Silver knew the area and she was telling me about the history of this tree. Its a really ancient one with some mystical background. So much so, that many people leave little messages to loved ones who have passed away in the boughs and branches of the tree. Therefore, I imagined a person in the present, being at one with the tree; not only leaving a message for a loved one, a partner recently passed over, but presenting herself in an act of love to feel the touch of that loved one again. Hoping the feel of her skin and her warmth, would cross over boundaries to let her loved one know, the love is never ending.

Editing

Yes, I had to clone out all of our wellingtons and warm coats and other stuff, was sat at the lower left of the picture. I couldn't crop it out, as the crop would have been too close to the tree, so clone and healing brush time. I also enhanced the clarity to show the tree texture a little more.

In my camera bag

Most of what I own is on my camera bag, Canon 70 D, Canon EF16-35MM 1:2.8L II LENS, Canon EF 50mm 1:1.8 ii Prime lens, Sigma 10-20mm 1:3.5 DC HSM wide-Angle lens Canon 430 EX III flash Roundflash Portable softbox Cokin ND / ND Grad filter selection Loadsa batteries.

Feedback

I read all about trying to plan and sort the shoot for a particular time and weather pattern, but when you are a hobbyist photographer and are very time and occasion restricted, there is only a certain window of opportunity available to you, just go with what you have. I always ( well 95% of the time to be honest), have an idea of the feel and theme I intend to shoot, so when those windows of opportunity do present themselves, use what is available within the planned theme. Previously I have been detracted by location/weather and gone off-theme and, whilst not been disappointed with the shoot, ended-up with a desire to have stuck to my own theme and original ideas. But no shoot (so far) is a bad shoot, just different and, whilst not wanting to contradict myself on sticking to the theme, sometimes a little deviation (from the plan, not necessarily the model's shoot levels ;0) can result in something wonderful.
