Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken during a set I was shooting under an old Victorian Pier at Weston Super Mare in England. (A few years ago, the pier featured in Remains of the Day film with Anthony Hopkins by the way).

Time

I took the shot on 11 July at 1323.

Lighting

Being just after midday, the sun was traversing across the sky over the coastline, and we had to go under the pier to avoid some of the harshness of the direct sun. I didn't want my model to be squinting so with her back to the sun, all I needed was a gold reflector to lighten her face a little and I got the shots I was seeking.

Equipment

The gear I was using was a Canon EOS 70D, with my trusty Canon EF 16-35, 1:2.8, L II lens. A lens that is my mainstay and covers most of my subjects.

Inspiration

I loved the look of the pier, the derelict ruggedness of the iron work, stretching out over large boulders to the sea. Although it's not really evident in this shot. Chloe, my model and I, were shooting some latex dresses a London designer had sent for me to shoot and, I reckoned the red shiny material of this dress, juxtaposed with the rough iron work and smooth boulders quite well. Chloe only had minimal day make-up, a little lippy and eyeliner/lashes which again, brought a nice, everyday feel to a flowing summer dress shoot, with a dress made from material, which some would consider only using for specific, fetish work.

Editing

Yes, a little sharpening and a slight reduction in the overall brightness.

In my camera bag

My Kata 3N1-20 bag, normally holds my 70D, and 16-35 lens used in this shot, my Canon 70-300 1:4.5-5.6 DO zoom lens, Sigma 10-20mm 1:3.5 DC HSM Wide Angle lens, Canon 430EXIII-RT flash, a selection of ND filters and my Roundflash portable softbox.

Feedback

MMM well, on a fashion shoot like this, I generally go out with an idea of the style of images I wish to capture and a few locations where I think will suit the feel I am after. But as things do have a habit of changing, light, objects I the way, people being interested, I shoot away until the moment arrives when all things you was looking for align to get what you was looking for.
