Location
This photo was shot from Quibaree Park which is a small green space sitting right against Sydney Harbour. Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.Time
This particular instant was just a minute or two after the ball dropped for New Years 2012. They do a kid's hour fireworks show earlier on so parents have enough time to get the kiddos home and return for the real show at midnight. I was able to set up and get my camera settings just right during the kids version, then snapped this shot during the midnight madness.Lighting
I had experimented with shutter speeds during the earlier show so I had a pretty good idea of my desired settings. You can see the Luna Park Ferris wheel and castle to the left side of the photo below Harbour Bridge. They were a bit overexposed compare to the rest of the photo but I liked the addition of contrast to the foreground.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D90 and a Nikkor 55-200 F4Inspiration
Shooting fireworks on long exposure has always been one of my favorite types of photography. Having traveled to Sydney from Canberra, Australia just for New Years I knew that I was in for a treat. It is generally a battle to get waterfront during the show but thankfully we had friends holding a place for us. I was able to set my tripod up with people sitting directly below and in front of my camera. They were good sports about the whole thing and asking politely before setting up certainly helped my case.Editing
All of the processing involved was a slight adjustment to the white balance. Overall I was happy enough with the photo and was pretty inexperienced with editing software at the time.In my camera bag
My equipment at the time of this photo and now are much different. Currently my first addition to my pack is my Nikon D600 body with a vertical grip and Black Rapid strap for safety and comfort carrying. My go-to lens of choice is generally my Nikkor 70-200mm F4 but I also love playing with the wide angle view on my Nikkor 16-35 mm F4. I always am sure to carry a good stack of varied ND filters for water and landscape photos as needed.Feedback
Simply getting out at night and shooting various night photography scenes will be your best bet to learning how to take quality images with your equipment. Play with your settings as needed. You'll find with most firework shows that many of the best displays are done within 5-7 seconds so plan accordingly when adjusting your shutter speed. Tripods are absolute necessity with long exposures but I have been known to use a crushed beer can and the ground when in a pinch!
