Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken Just outside Vic, Iceland on our honeymoon vacation on September 27th, 2022. That is my wife in the cute white hat on the other side.

Time

10:39AM September 27th, 2022.

Lighting

Natural overcast lighting, no flash or lighting of any kind.

Equipment

Canon 5Ds, 16-35mm EF Canon lens, natural light, handheld. I wanted a good depth of field, so the usual struggle of ISO and F stop existed and I settled of; 1/125, F11, 1250 ISO. Knowing there are good noise reducers out there now I am less afraid of higher ISO's and get my desired depth of field.

Inspiration

Walking the worn path along the coast outside Vic Iceland, I saw person after person shooting the same scenery from the same perspectives. While they were breathtaking scenes to be had, I wanted to walk a less traveled path, so we walked inland as surely Iceland would provide great scenery anywhere, we went. So, off the beaten path we went. It didn't take long before we found this cavernous hole that led straight to the ocean. I aligned the mountain, the crater and my wife in a center justification shot. My Inspiration: The combination of the cavernous depth of the crater aligned with the highest peak in the background plus the added cuteness of my wife, was defiantly my inspiration here. "What goes up comes down" cliche in one shot. With the wind ripping very fast I felt the sky would have a time lapse look, which I was more than fine with. I personally love the result and it hangs proudly 32" tall in our home.

Editing

Very basic editing as you may have guessed. White Ballance, Clarity, Texture. Highlights... nothing elaborate, low tech.

In my camera bag

When traveling to new faraway lands I pack it all and the kitchen sink too! You never know what you will need out there and I have been without left behind gear in the past and I never wanted that to happen again. Both trips to Iceland I had lenses measuring from 8mm all the way to 840mm!! yes, I carried my 25-pound 600 mm (with a 1.4 multiplier) and tripod everywhere I went on our honeymoon! Many prices to pay for this I might add. 8-15mm. 16-35mm. 35-70mm. 70-200mm. 600mm 1.4 multiplier and a 2X multiplier. it's a workout. My Camera referred to as "The Beast" The Canon 5Ds, packing a whopping 50.6MP full frame sensor was the work horse here. Also carried 3 Flashpoint speedlights and remote system. To top off all the weight on my back i strapped a Carbon fiber tripod to the pack. I was a pack mule for sure.

Feedback

After you have found something of interest worthy of a shot, look around at both foreground and background for items to enhance the photo. Or even what can I add to the shot to fill in otherwise boring areas. When I view a finished photo, after seeing the subject or point of interest of the photo I look around at everything else for added ties or points of interest that are supporting or enhancing the story or subject. etc etc
