Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at home in Vancouver, WA.

Time

This was taken in the evening after my wife surprised me with a new backdrop. So after the kiddos went to bed, I set up the new backdrop to see what I can do with it.

Lighting

This was a classic setup with a 45° 32” beauty dish. I used an AD 200 with the round head in TTL.

Equipment

Nikon z7 with the 35mm 1.8 on a vanguard tripod. For the lighting I used the 32” glow beauty dish with the AD 200.

Inspiration

My wife had bought a new backdrop for me and I really wanted try it out. I had just seen a friend of mine use the same backdrop, so it got the creativity juices flowing. I started taking some experimental self portraits that I felt I wasn’t getting the results I wanted. So I got a little more comfortable and grabbed my Olympus to give me a prop to hold and use as another focal point.

Editing

I did some work in Lightroom. Very little though. I cropped in a bit. Raised the blacks on the tone curve and added a little vignette. That’s about it

In my camera bag

Nikon z7 with all my primes. 20mm 1.8, 35mm 1.8, 50mm 1.8, 85mm 1.8, and the 105mm 2.8. I carry the ad200 flash as well as some filters.

Feedback

I would say to experiment with lighting. There are so many different looks you can achieve with a simple set up. Explore and have fun with it
