Location
This photo was taken in my front yard at my home in Vancouver Washington. I remember it was a particularly beautiful spring afternoon.Time
My family and I were hanging out in the front yard when the post arrived. Our new masks had come and I had my camera in hand luckily. It was my sons first time experiencing having to cover up his face. He had this very sad response to it. It was a difficult adjustment for a three year old.Lighting
I live in the Pacific Northwest where lighting is always almost perfect. The skies usually have the right amount of clouds to diffuse harsh sunlight. This day was no different.Equipment
The only equipment I used was my Nikon D750 with the Nikon 20mm f1.8.Inspiration
When the masks arrived in the post, my wife and I were explaining to my son why we needed to wear these masks and how life was going to be different for the foreseeable future. When we had him try it on, I knew I it was going to be a great portrait.Editing
All I did was I removed the color and boosted the contrast and clarity a bit.In my camera bag
I just upgraded my kit recently. I’ve got the Nikon z7. I’ve got to have a 70-200 always. I have the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 g2. Native Nikon 24-70 z f4. Nikon 20mm f1.8. And a Tamron 35mm f1.4. I have some ND filters, a flash/trigger and that’s about it.Feedback
It would be hard to give advice to capture something similar. But I will say that real emotion is something that makes a great photo. When you can capture a candid moment or an emotion without having to pose the subject, it ends up being more impactful and usually turns out pretty amazing.
