Very occasionally it happens that griffon vultures can be found in the Netherlands, often as a result of food scarcity - griffon vultures only eat carrion - in the area of origin. The griffon vulture is the most common vulture species in Europe. It breeds in southern European mountain areas. Spain in particular has a large population of griffon vultures, but thanks to successful reintroduction programs in the French and Italian Alps, the species is now found there again.
