Insane evening last night. I finished photographing a house about 4pm yesterday up in Red Rock. I checked radar and some storms were hitting Casa Grande so I headed north. I was almost there anyway. I began seeing a lot of dust near Picacho Peak. Unfortunately I was a little late as the line of storms was ahead of me, so I had to drive through the thick dust at very slow speeds to get out ahead of it. Took me about 40 minutes to break through. I think the dust was moving faster than me at times. I met up with some friends on the other side. We were like a bunch of little kids on Christmas. I heard more giggles and random yelps of joy. I'm sure none of those came from me. But then it kept getting better as we moved down I8. We would leap frog each other, setting up, photographing, take down quick as it was hitting, and then driving a bit to get back out in front, just to do the same over and over. And then the sun finally broke through lighting up the wall of dust. We were almost to Yuma when sunset happened. I finally let the dust overtake me and it was so thick I could only see 5 feet. Fortunately, I had noticed a Jack in the Box so I took shelter there and ate dinner in the town of Wellton, just 30 miles outside of Yuma. Lights were flickering inside the restaurant and dust was actually getting in through the ceiling lights. There were a bunch of people inside, just waiting for the storm to subside. By the time I finished eating and sharing a few stories with some of the employees and customers, the dust had cleared enough to drive. 8:30pm and I still had a four hour drive home. Sign read Tucson 197 miles. How did I get so far from home?
