Summer in Stockholm. This duck boat seemed almost surreal when it drifted into view, seemingly out of nowhere. I had just returned from my birthday dinner in Gamla Stan, which is the 'old town' in Stockholm. I had been photographing other things; air balloons were drifting by in the sky, and sunset was coming. All of a sudden, this very strange boat drifted into shot out of nowhere, reminding me of other surreal images from "The Prisoner," the TV show of long ago. To take photographs is to see scenes in frames, and the frames themselves create surrealism if the image doesn't seem to belong in the frame. But someone has this boat in Stockholm, and presumably takes it out from time to time. When something, whether it's an air balloon or an unexpected duck, floats into frame, one is duty bound to take the shot. It seems like an escapee from a fairyland for children, heading out to sea. It was a magical, odd day in a way, and this image was one of the shots that stand out as expressing the day's ability to delight, for Gamla Stan, and Sweden itself, is a magical place, where odd and beautiful things can be seen.
