Behind The Lens

Location

Vik, Iceland

Time

Early afternoon, June 2014

Lighting

This is an angle you do not see taken very often, because I had to get this picture from below (there's a parking lot near the shore of Vik, which is a waterside community). The light is usually very cool, blue, and clear in the month of June, but it's important to know that the weather in Iceland is unpredictable, so you take your shots under all weather conditions.

Equipment

Canon 6D, handheld with tripod for stability, no flash. 75-300 mm Canon lens.

Inspiration

I caught this angle from the car as we were leaving the parking lot, actually, and we went back to the parking space, I got out and, laying on the ground at the right angle was able to duplicate the view.

Editing

I processed it in Adobe Photoshop from RAW, but it didn't require a lot of changes or fixes. The key was using a lens with IS (stability) and staying very still to get the shot.

In my camera bag

Canon 6D and I like to bring 3 lenses, one wide angle, one macro, one telephoto. I keep upgrading the quality of the lens and buy Canon lenses. I have gotten some very nice shots recently from 35 mm f/1.4L lens.

Feedback

You really have to be willing to get down on the ground and look up, or look down, for that matter. Some angles are hard to see just looking straight ahead. I also personally believe in filling one's lens with the shot, and not getting so far back on landscapes that it's hard to know what it is we're supposed to be seeing. Having said that, I am rarely satisfied with a shot. I always want to go back and re-see what I've missed. I spend a lot of time reviewing other people's work, and I live in hope of getting landscape shots that I consider extraordinary (keeping in mind that some shots I think of as extraordinary are also highly processed, so there's that to consider as well). In this case, I would definitely go back and take this shot with a better lens.
