This interesting image records multi-colored refracted light shining through the The first order Fresnel lens that beaconed to ships from the Ponce Inlet, Florida lighthouse until it was replaced with a a third order rotating Fresnel lens in 1933. This original lens is on display at the Ponce Inlet lighthouse museum along with many other interesting pieces of lighthouse equipment.
At 175 feet in height, the Ponce Inlet lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in the state and one of the tallest in the United States (the Cape Hatteras Light in North Carolina is taller at 207 feet. It is located between St. Augustine Light and Cape Canaveral Light. Restored by the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse Preservation Association, the lighthouse became a National Historic Landmark in 1998. You can still climb the spiral staircase to the top for a great view of the Atlantic, beaches, and surrounding area, if you have the energy to do so!
