I imagine that in the 1800's, most of the family life was spent outdoors. Everyone had their chores to do each day to help keep the family from going hungry or being cold. There were crops to plant, tend or harvest. There was the task of preparing meals each day as well as preparation for winter. Drying & curing meat, canning vegetables, harvesting & storing root crops. Also the chore of washing clothes, dishes, etc. Hot water didn't just come out of a faucet when you turn a knob! So many things to do in a days time. It took everyone to make it work.
