This particular formation stood on sloping flat soil that otherwise would be something you’d walk past. The remnants of a tree branch lying there had me wondering how it got there, as there weren’t any trees in the area. I concluded that it must have been washed there by a storm.
As I walked around the triangular protrusion to find an angle that would frame the formation & branch in a pleasing way, a massive dust storm started in the distance.
The storm moved toward us at incredible speed as forceful winds picked up sand as it intensified. Our cameras became coated in moisture, which lead to our equipment getting caked in fine dust.
Then it hit us in full force! We ran for cover as our exposed faces were getting sand blasted & it felt like needles were piercing our eyes. We couldn’t see more than 10 feet in front of us, nor open our eyes without them filling up with fine sand. It burned!
As we huddled against a large boulder I couldn’t help but feel the energy of the earth. This must have happened thousands of times over a millennia, carving & eroding rock & sediment left by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago. We were witnessing a live glimpse into how this all was formed. It was exhilarating! What an visceral experience!
