.....How exciting was this! I came across this hiking, normally, this time of year, i hope to see a few Northern Harriers that have come to winter here in the Wichita Mountains. It was unusually foggy throughout the mountains and honestly couldn't see more than a few car lengths ahead of me.
.....Yes, so, I am out and about shooting foggy landscape scenes, the fog lasted well into noon. Then whoosh, the sun started peaking through as the fog retreated. Oh, look over there, I think that is a Northern Harrier, the juveniles and the females are remarkably similar except for some streaks on the chest.....a tawny brown, great camouflage, a challenge to acquire focus at speed..... never have seen a male Northern Harrier....ever.
.....Hmmm, this one look different, flying low, just above the grasses, head down ....I guess it could be another type of hawk or a falcon.... I've seen the other species doing it...
.....Wait a minute....is that thing kind of a hazy light blue on top.....white on the bottom....Wow it is! Now the pressure is really on, I've got a longish lens but fully zoomed out with lingering fog in the atmosphere.....that's pretty freakin hard.
.....But i have to try, I may never see one again, they don't call it the Grey Ghost for nothing. I'm shooting, but i won't know until i get home if I took a picture of him or the grass......I'm shooting .....crap, i can't get focus on this bird..... it keeps moving around .....I'm shooting....I got one, i think, or was that the grass.... everything is moving so fast ....and there he goes over the ridge....he's gone.
