Built by King Bagyidaw in 1816 in a memory of his wife (named Princess Hsinbyume who died in a childbirth) on the banks of the Irrawaddy River just north of Mandalay, the Hsinbyume Pagoda reminded me a fragile sea of snow-white glaze in its ethereal beauty softly touching the sky of azure. This stunning man-made structure is designed in a very unique way - its shape represents Mount Meru (the sacred mountain and center of the universe in Buddhist cosmology) with seven wavy terraces like seven mountain ranges surrounding Mount Meru.
Suddenly you found yourself drifting along its gentle waves under the pulsing heat of the midday sun - and you got caught up in the moment like it was the only place on earth you wanted to be…
Young Buddhist novices from the nearby orphanage, like two missing raisins, on marshmallow-like all-white terraces of the Pagoda, who, by the way, everyday reenter this labyrinth of magic trying to escape from their itsy-bitsy world of monotonous routine. These pure little monks, like other children, are just seeking the sunshine and the soulful smiles of the world.
