This photo is of a cave carved underneath an Alaskan iceberg. The title refers to the caption over the entrance to Hades in the “Inferno” section of the medieval poet Dante’s epic poem La Divina Comedia, where the poet is being led to his afterlife, leaving all hope behind. The hollowing out of the iceberg indicates the rapid melting of the polar icecaps due to the devastating effects of global warming. The image symbolizes the urgent need for people to become involved in the effort to reverse those effects, despite the resistance of some national leaders, particularly the current U.S. president, who regards global warming as “fake” science.
