Himeji castle (locals also call it Heron castle - Shirasagijo) is almost unanimously considered to be Japan's most spectacular castle. It is also a national treasure and protected as a World Heritage Site. It is one of only 12 original Japanese castles that has never been destroyed by war, fire or natural disasters. When visiting make sure to enter the grounds too. You have to pay for a ticket but it is well worth it.
