It was a great morning (it's Hawai'i; what morning isn't great?). Thank you!

Slow shutter, low ISO, high f-stop, enhanced motion blur in the clouds. Thank you!

Thank you! It was rather early and the clouds were moving a bit fast. Closed down the aperture and experimented with shutter speed and the lowest ISO, brought out the contrast in ACR.

Location
This was taken in Hawai'i on the island of O'ahu. Specifically, Lanakai Beach on the windward side of the island.Time
This was taken at 7:05 a.m.Lighting
I had been switching between a graduated ND filter and just the lens with no filter while taking sunrise photos. The problem was that the clouds were not cooperating with the sun, and the trade winds started blowing harder. I actually wanted to get a sunrise between the two off shore mountains (Na Mokolua) but THAT didn't work, either. So I framed the shot just to the right of the sun so it wouldn't blow out the shot.Equipment
I was using a Nikon D90 with an 18-105mm lens, exposure 1/10 at f/22 with a remote shutter trip, ISO 100 and an Oben tripod (weighted because of the wind).Inspiration
I really wanted to get that "sunrise between the mountains" shot, but since that wasn't going to happen, I wanted to capture the beautiful hues in the sky over the ocean. I had already taken some shots facing the other direction of the mountain range in the background beyond Kailua Beach (I'm from Florida, so mountains and oceans are nonexistent!) and facing the wind I wondered what this shot would look like.Editing
The post processing was mostly clean up with one exception; "clean up" because there were three beach walkers on the shoreline right in front of the mountains, and part of a boat on the sand near the dune line. The biggest clean up was because it was so windy and I had been zooming in and out for two hours that sensor spots (three big ones) were in the sky. I also brought the exposure down slightly and increased the shadows. Lastly, I took the highlights down in ACR, and increased the contrast and clarity slightly. In my camera bag
I have a 24-85mm and 70-300mm lens, a rocket blower, remote, and the Sun Surveyor app on my phone to indicate where the sun (or moon) will be at any given time of the day anywhere in the world (a real time saver that takes the guesswork out of predictions!), a graduated ND6 filter, and a graduated polaroid filter.Feedback
On my 5 day trip to O'ahu, I took over 700 photos -- all for fun. Yes, I wanted sunrise and sunset photos, beaches with azure water and great vistas, but the two that were the absolute best -- this one and another one of a breaking wave at Sandy Beach -- were technically accidents, meaning I didn't plan the shots. I knew I wanted a long exposure on this one because of the wind and how fast the clouds were starting to move, but it was getting too light on the beach for a truly long exposure and I also didn't want the water to be too fuzzy or everything to be too dark with an ND filter. I also got up very early every day to be on the beach I wanted to be on long before the sky started to lighten at all. Sunrises are always one of the best ways to start your day!
