Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Jacksonville Beach, FL at the municipal fishing pier.

Time

7:20 a.m.; yes, you have to get out of bed for these shots!

Lighting

I wanted to show the light through the pilings, so you have to move to the correct location.

Equipment

Nikon D90, 18-105mm lens at 18mm, manual mode, matrix metering, auto white balance, ISO 2500, 1/400 at f/18, no tripod, no flash.

Inspiration

Light and shadows, oceans and sunrises all in the same spot! This was actually one of the last shots I was going to take, but as I was leaving the beach I looked back one last time and saw this, so I just had to take another couple of minutes.

Editing

As I usually do in ACR, I brought down the highlights and the blacks, brought up the contrast and shadows, and also increased the vibrance and clarity.

In my camera bag

Minimal gear; while I shoot as naturally as possible, I also carry an adjustable polarizing filter for water shots.

Feedback

Capture what your mind sees, not what your eye sees through the viewfinder. Enjoy the view, and think about how to convey what you are seeing without the camera first, then compose it to match what you just saw. Take the time to enjoy your experience, especially when photographing nature and wildlife.
