Location
I took this photo one early evening at the beach in Clearwater, FloridaTime
This was in late October at 7 in the evening.Lighting
While walking toward the beach after dinner, the sunset showed the most brilliant shades of red and had created quite a crowd at the shore.Equipment
Nikon D90, 18-105mm lens at 58mm, ISO 400, 1/400 at f8, matrix metering, auto white balance.Inspiration
When you look at a sunset (which, living on the east coast of Florida, sunsets over the ocean are real treats!) that takes your breath away with that "wow" factor, you just have to share it. I wanted to show not just the sky, but the fact that the sea oats gave the scene a bit of depth. I've taken plenty of sunset photos, but seeing it from behind a sand dune gave it a certain interesting quality to me. I also intentionally focused on the sea oats rather than the sky because that is how I saw it -- foreground first, then the background. I took two shots here -- one with the focus on the sea oats (this shot) and another with the sea oats blurred and the sky sharp. The sharp foreground silhouetted was far more interesting than the reverse.Editing
A lot of times with these types of shots I will bring the highlights way down in ACR, bring up the vibrance and the contrast, and slightly bump up the clarity. In my camera bag
I just had my camera for this shot. I had left my bag in the hotel room but threw the camera in the car on my way to dinner. I knew the sunset was coming and my thought was to photograph it, but aside from that there was absolutely no preplanning!Feedback
Capture your shot as your mind sees it, not what your eyes see. You see the foreground first with a wonderful and colorful background. Because of the distance, you don't always want everything to be sharp; that's not how you first see it. Sharp objects draw your attention to that object, and a sharp sky would detract from the sea oats in this shot.
