Location
Somewhere in the farmland high up in the cordillera, just above 1200m this is the best part of Guanacaste, always stormy and diverse, fantastic light for moments and then gone.Time
it was quite late in the afternoon, rain was coming in and a storm coming up. Although it looked like time to head home after shooting some insects on a hidden track, I decided to make the best of the clouds and head for the ridge before turning home on a muddy road. The highlands are best in the early morning and late afternoon, but the latter only if you are prepared to get wet.Lighting
there was plenty of it in the sky, changing every second.this was a short moment of light behind the rain.Equipment
The 180mm Sigma macro as I had been shooting dragonflies. Makes a good light tele and lives most of the time on my D4 back home. Tripods are not really helpful in Guanacaste, a wide brimmed hat and half decent walking boots are more important. And a 4x4.Inspiration
the beautiful light , the changing clouds and the weather which is always spectacular on the dividing line between atlantic and pacific ocean.Editing
Sure, I converted it to BW in Exposure. I used one of my presets which uses a bit of infrared. That helps to see through the rain, but don`t overdo it. I particularly like Exposure because the colours stay always natural and the Monos are like choosing from a box of films with extra adjustments you can use your orane and yellows filters like in the old days... Not like many ultraprocessed pics you see these days.In my camera bag
The D4 or D800, the macro lens used here, a decent wide angle like the 18mm 3.5 Nikkor AI, some vintage bokeh lens like the 35 1.4 N, a lazy zoom (24-70) and often a tele, which is either a 300 2.8 Tamron MF or a 500 mm Nikkor.Feedback
Drive or walk around and watch the clouds and the scenery. Take it in , come back if you missed it. I often looked at that very tree but only twice was so lucky with the clouds. Observe, get wet, observe more and and shoot when it looks right.
