Location
For this session, I met with judokas Ian de Man and Tim Houwing from budo club Lu gia jen on a beach in The Hague, The Netherlands.Time
We met in late summer around sunset and started shooting straight away, to make the best of the remaining light.Lighting
This shot was lit with four basic manual compact flashes, balanced with the fading sunlight.Equipment
The action was recorded with a Nikon D800 with a 85mm Nikkor lens. Four basic manual compact flashes (I think it was Godox TT600) were radiotriggered.Inspiration
Budoclub Lu gia jen (lugiajen.nl) required profile photos of all teachers of the club for a new website. I know of the skill of these athletes and asked some of them to display their impressive techniques. The sand is a wonderful tool to trace a movement in a frozen moment and allows to visualise the actual movement.Editing
These photos required only some minor post-processing (exposure, contrast, cropping). In my camera bag
For a shoot like this, I carry a Nikon D800, some lenses including a 85mm, radiotrigger, manual compact flashes, extra batteries and basic lamp stands.Feedback
Pick a dry evening, without too much wind and nice temperatures. Make sure your models know what they are doing, there is always a risk of injury. We rolled up the pants and added some sand, which falls out during the throw, thereby tracing the movement. Have fun!
