Location
I took this shot during a mid morning walk through the woods in Florida. I happened upon an area where there were dozens of these flowers growing wild were intertwined in vines. The area was lit up like someone had shot off hundreds of small firecrackers.Time
It was mid morning and the light was fairly strong, but because I was under the trees and was glad I had my tripod. As I set up the shot I really wanted just one flower to stand out, so I took a piece of black cloth and used it as a background and moved in close with the camera.Lighting
The light was pearcing through the trees, but not exactly in the area I was. Since I always carry a white card with me I taped it to the front of my tripod and then took a small flash to accent and sharpen the overall subject. The slight fill from the white card and then the sharpening effect of the flash seems to have worked good with this shot. Also, the black background worked good as compared to a lighter brown that was there.Equipment
The equipment used in this shot was my Canon 30D, small flash, Start-D tripod, lack cloth and a white fill card. When shooting nature shots I always take my Tackle box filled with small clamps, different colored cloths and an assortment of other things. Too many times I've been somewhere and missed a shot because of not having a piece of string or other small helper with me.Inspiration
When I first noticed the stand of flowers I was amazed with there beauty. As l looked closer at my subject I decided to single out just one flower and worked on composing just the one. Had I shot all the Flowers's in that area I felt it would just be to overwhelming and I would have lost the effect of the flowers delicate surface and bristle texture.Editing
My post processing is always kept to a minimum. Other than adjusting contrast and some hue I try to leave the shot as close to the way I found it. Post processing is great in some shots, but I've learned to crop Jan the camera and get the white balance and exposure correct. I use Photoshop and Lightroom when I do any post-processing.In my camera bag
All my equipment is in tackle boxes or pelican cases and is taylored to my different interests. I have my closeup equipment, different lens, filters and camera bodies in my main camera box. I have a case for lighting, another just filled with clamps, tape and string. But as hard as I try many times I come up on a shot and just have to wing it which what I find around me. There is nothing like a sturdy tree to brace agenst when ever I look at abecause you did not take your tripod that day!Feedback
When ever I look at a potential shot I always stand back and then move in closer to the subject. In this case the number of flowers was overwhelming and I ended up just singleing in on one flower. Sometimes too much of a good thing is just that. The thing I love about this flower is it texture and I believe it would have been lost shooting a group of them.
