This photo was taken in Paro, Bhutan where the Paro Taktsang monastery is situated. It was taken from a landing area situated just before the final set of steps leading to the monastery. It presents you with some magnificent views of the monastery and the surrounding valley.Time
This photo was taken at around 3 pm in the afternoon. We had trekked all the way up to the monastery in falling snow. I took this photo when we started our trek to the base. It had just stopped snowing and the weather had cleared up and we could see the clear blue skies. I had a clear view of the beautiful monastery and it was a perfect moment to take the photo.Lighting
It was snowing all the way when we were trekking up to the monastery. The clouds were very low and were almost covering the monastery making it very difficult to get a clear view of it. But when we were ready to come down it had stopped snowing and the sky had cleared up and I could get a perfect view of the beautiful monastery. It was almost the perfect light to take the photo.Equipment
As it was snowing when we were going up my hands had gone stiff. To tell you the truth I was freezing as we were really not prepared for this king of weather. It doesn’t snow this much in late February in Bhutan. I did not even have any gloves on. Once it started to stop snowing the temperature started to drop further and my hands started shivering more. There was no way I could hold the camera still to get a proper shot and to make things worse I had forgotten my tripod in the car at the base. So I just whipped out my phone, a Oneplus 6 and took this shot. I must say that it turned out to be one of the best one’s from the trip to Bhutan.Inspiration
Bhutan is an amazingly beautiful country. There’s a photo opportunity at every turn. The Paro Taktsang monastery is an architectural marvel built in 1692. It’s built on a cliff side in the upper Paro valley in Bhutan. Just looking at it when you are trekking up and down the cliff fills you with awe. And to experience it up close is absolutely the best feeling I have ever had.Editing
I did some basic post processing in Lightroom. Just cropped the photo a little so that it looked better as a composition. Also added a little bit of sharpening and vibrancy to it. Lifted the blue of the sky and the reds in the monastery to make it stand out against the backdrop. Finally had to bring down the highlights and whites in the snow so that it wouldn’t blow out.In my camera bag
These days I carry a Fuji X-T3 with 18-55mm and 100-400mm lenses. I like to take pictures of landscapes and also wildlife so these two lenses are good for that. Also plan to add the 10-24mm lens to my equipment. But at the time of taking this photo I had my Nikon D5600 with the 18-55mm and 70-300mm lenses. Also I always have my phone in my pocket just in case I need to take that quick shot. God knows it was very useful when I took this photo.Feedback
I don’t consider myself to be a professional photographer. I am learning new things everyday whenever I go out and shoot. But one thing I have learnt so far is that have patience while taking photos, scout the area to find the best possible spot to take the photo. Do not be in a hurry. Even now I can think of some other spots from where i could have taken this photo. Bhutan is an amazing place to visit and photograph landscapes and I certainly plan to go back there. The Paro Taktsang monastery is an absolute must visit destination to visit. Visit in mid to late February so that you find less crowd and can also experience the snow.
