Brown Fish Owl. I have had a passion for tigers since primary school. Fired up by a book, Man-Eaters of Kumaon by Jim Corbett. So when I had the opportunity to travel to tiger country I jumped at it. As with all eco systems they contain a diversity of species. Owls are also a passion of mine. I added 3 species to my life list on this trip. Our wildlife and tiger adventure was based at the Emerald Eco Retreat in the heart of the Bandhavgarh National Park. 100k Northeast from Jabalpur. Photographed Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, Garhpuri, Madhya Pradesh, India

Behind The Lens

Location

Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve. Garhpuri, Madhya Pradesh, India.

Time

It was 6:18 pm and we were dashing to the gate to beat the curfew. But photo opportunities aren't influenced by schedules.

Lighting

Hazy sky produced a very flat and subdued light with dusk approaching and this section of forest in shadows. As it turns out, great lighting for this owl.

Equipment

Canon 7D Mark 11 and an EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS 11 USM. As with most of my photographs, this is handheld but I use any rests that are available.

Inspiration

Owls are some of my favorite birds. Their big eyes, the ability to find their prey by sound and silent flight are just some of their extraordinary characteristics.

Editing

I used Lightroom 6.14 and Photoshop CS6. 40% crop. WB as shot on Auto 5100. On download, I add +11 Whites -5 Blacks, Lens profile and chromic aberration corrections Sharpening 27 and 74 mask. +20 clarity +13 vibrance I tend not to use Lightrooms noise reduction I use a Photoshop addon Noiseware 5 and Raya Pro for sharpening. In this case, I didn't but in review I should have as it is quite noisy.

In my camera bag

I am a Wildlife Artist and Photographer I chose the 7D for the extra magnification on the crop sensor. My carry on camera bag for travels weighs 14kg. It contains all my essential Camera gear including laptop, card reader, chargers, hard drives, cables, shoulder stock .... Shooting with a Canon 7D and 7D Mark11, 100-400 1:4.5-5.6 L IS 11 USM. & 24-105 1:4.

Feedback

Have your camera ready even when the light fades. As the light fades I keep adjusting my cameras to the light to be ready for photo opportunities that come when you least expect it.
