Location
This photograph was taken at the Mopani Restcamp, Kruger Park, South Africa. Rest camps are like holiday villages surrounded by fences. You can walk around safely in the grounds. The gardens attract many animals and birds but keep out the larger and more dangerous animals.Time
After a long day of game watching and back in camp before curfew, you still can't waste the golden hour. This shot was taken 30 minutes before sunset.Lighting
Getting an exposure that didn't blow out the background but gathered recoverable darks was the challenge. The image was almost a silhouette but I knew from the histogram that the darks were recoverable.Equipment
Shot with a Canon 7D, 100-400 is USM, set at 400mm, 500ISO, 1/400 at f/7.1. I use very compact Cullman shoulder stock. I always shoot RAW.Inspiration
Nature is my inspiration. This stunning bird found in the golden hour just happened to be on a branch with complementing coloured leaves.Editing
I always shoot RAW to maximise the post processing available. All post processing was done with Lightroom. Exposure +1, +56 on shadows, +37 Clarity, -34 blacks, +43 lights. -30 Vignetting, noise reduction and sharpening with 82 masking. Despite all these adjustments my aim is for a look that reflects reality. In my camera bag
I am a Wildlife Artist and Photographer I chose the 7D for the extra magnification on the crop sensor. My carry on camera bag for travels weighs 14kg. It contains all my essential Camera gear including laptop, card reader, chargers, hard drives, cables, shoulder stock .... Shooting with a Canon 7D and 7D Mark11, 100-400 1:4.5-5.6 L IS 11 USM. & 24-105 1:4.Feedback
Many potentially great images are dumped by inexperienced photographers who make judgements on the image displayed on the back of their cameras. Learn to read histograms if you want to get the most out of the opportunities. Africa is not all about the big 5 and Safari camps offer great opportunities for photographing wildlife. There is the added bonus that many of these wild camp residents and visitors are very approachable. I photographed 17 species of birds in 2 hours at one camp. Including my best shots of a Paradise Flycatcher. They were all visiting one dripping tap in the garden surrounding the camp pool. Whilst most people head straight for the sundowners (Sunset drinks) this is often the best light of the day and should not be wasted. I even take my cameras to sundowners as you never know what might turn up!
