Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Silver Spring Falls State Park in Oregon.

Time

It was around 3 or 4 in the afternoon. I really wanted a shot with fall colors and couldn't find much. Then finally I got to this spot.

Lighting

A lot of the day was cloudy, so I was thrilled to have a moment of sunshine. I had to seize the moment.

Equipment

This was a Canon 5D Mark II. I don't care for tripods, but brought one for this trip because I knew I wanted to do long exposures on the falls. This hike passes several falls.

Inspiration

Finally I had fall colors and falls and good lighting. I knew it would be my best shot of the day. I didn't care for the dry moss at the upper right, but I couldn't knock it off, at least not without risking falling down a cliff. I'm not that crazy.

Editing

I tweaked the exposure a bit, but otherwise not much. My post-processing skills are limited. I suppose I could remove the dead moss from the top right if I really wanted to, but then again, part of me thinks, this is what was there, why fake it?

In my camera bag

I usually have a macro lens, a walking around (24-105) lens, and maybe a wide angle. Three lenses tops. Plus snacks.

Feedback

I was limited with where I could stand because of a crowd of other hikers, but otherwise, I would suggest to move around and really find the angle that gives the best colored leaves and fewest dead leaves, if possible.
