Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Blachford Lake outside of Yellowknife, Canada in January. We were staying at the lodge.

Time

It was sunrise, so that far north in January, it was about 9 am!

Lighting

The sunrise was making a nice glow across the land and reflecting off the biker.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon G7X, a small handheld camera, suitable for use while on a bike in the snow. Nothing else was needed.

Inspiration

My husband and I were snow biking for the first time, and as he biked up the path in the sunrise glow I just thought, "This would make a nice action photo."

Editing

I tweaked the exposure, contrast, shadows, etc. a bit, but overall I didn't do much to the photo.

In my camera bag

If I'm walking around in normal weather on a normal day, I would have a camera, one or two lenses, extra batteries, and a snack. But when hiking (or in the rare case snow biking) it would just be a small handheld camera. It was brutally cold here, so I couldn't be fumbling with gloves on and off and trying to adjust things.

Feedback

If I could do it again, I would have had the camera in continuous shooting mode, so that I would have had more options to choose from. Ideally, the bike would be a few feet farther away. This was a spontaneous photo, so I just shot with whatever the current settings were, which included single shooting. So I got this photo, and a photo with him farther away, but too far away. Better to have too many photos to choose from than not enough!
