Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is a composite and the model was photographed in my studio/basement in Colorado. The background and foreground shots of the apple trees were taken at the Ya Ya Farm and Orchard in Colorado.

Time

around noon.

Lighting

I use a two light setup at 45 degrees to light the model. I do this so that I can easily fit them into a composite piece not matter the time of day in the added background images.

Equipment

Canon 6D, two 800 watt strobes with large and medium octobox diffusers.

Inspiration

I love to create scenes in the studio that would otherwise take great undertakings to do on any particular location on any given day. I have a love for wardrobe and hats which I often find at estate and garage sales.

Editing

I work in Photoshop and also teach Photoshop for a college in California. Topaz is another program that I use in conjunction with Photoshop. One image may take several hours and the simpler images perhaps three or four hours.

In my camera bag

Canon 6D, 24-105 lens, 16-35 lens, 100-400 lens and of course snacks aplenty.

Feedback

Creating composites can be tricky if the lighting is not consistent but practice will get you there. Take as many background/foreground images while you are out and about as you can. Remember to shoot them with an aperture that will give you the sharpest details throughout as you can always blur them in Photoshop to give them that depth of field look. Why buy expensive backdrops when you can create your own! Have fun and keep shooting!
