Behind The Lens

Location

The subject in this photo was taken at my in home studio in Colorado.

Time

It was in the afternoon.

Lighting

Two strobes, one to the left and one to the right at 45 degree angles.

Equipment

Canon 6D, 24-105 lens, two strobes with softboxes. Shot against a white background.

Inspiration

I have had the pith helmet for some time and the model was over for a standard shoot. She brought the outfit and of course it reminded me of an old hunting type outfit so I incorporated the helmet and my shotgun and bullet belt to finish it off.

Editing

I use Photoshop and Lightroom. I start with the model and remove the background. I then choose a background that will go with the feeling I am trying to capture. In this case I wanted the vintage Coca-Cola ad feel. I work with the lighting, shadows and tones. I added the water drops to the bottle to make it look wet. I initially used glycerin for the wet look on the bottle, but this proved too messy. Glycerin is a bit oily.

In my camera bag

Canon 6D, 24-105 lens, 100-400 lens, 50mm lens and a flash.

Feedback

When putting together composites it is important to study the lighting, the angle, the focus and color of an image. I am constantly on the lookout for different backgrounds, textures, clouds and other images that may one day be used in a composite image. The model or models need to be lit consistently so that they will match the lighting in the scene. The last part of the composite for me is choosing whether or not to use filters to give a certain look or feel.
