I was perched on top of a temple to capture the sunrise over the templed landscape. The early morning light was a golden rose hue. Just after sunrise, the balloons floated through the scene. I liked this composition of the silhouetted balloons not only in the shape of a temple, but in balance with the rising sun.

This is one of the most iconic photos on ViewBug. And rightfully so. Absolutely magnificent! And the rest of your work leaves nothing to be desired either. Bravo! john

Balloons over Bagan was taken from the top of an ancient temple in Bagan, Myanmar. We were up to shoot the sunrise over temple filled plain. The sunrise was awesome and then the balloons drifted through the scene.Time
This was taken shortly after sunrise.Lighting
It is all about the light. In Bagan, the light at dawn and dusk was magical. It was a hazy rose-gold hue that transformed every scene. Because of the haze and mist, the sunlight was soft even after sunrise. This photo was captured in February 2016. So time of year may have played into the the position and angle of the sun.Equipment
I shot this with my Nikon D800, 70-200mm / f2.8 lens, and a Really Right Stuff carbon fiber tripod and ballhead.Inspiration
The temples at sunrise was an awesome shot. When the balloons drifted through the scene, it was an unplanned opportunity to capture the contrast of the new and the old. The simplicity of the balloons along side the details of the temples. In this photo, I also was looking at the patterns the silhouetted balloons were creating as they drifted through the scene. I liked this composition of the balloons not only because their combined shape looked like a temple, but also the placement of the balloons in the scene balanced well with the rising sun.Editing
I use Lightroom to organize my photos and do a majority of the post processing. For this photo, the post processing was minimal. It was limited to removing sensor dust spots, a little bit of clarity, and then adding a filter on the trees in the foreground to lighten the area enough to see the morning mist that was visible when I actually took the shot.In my camera bag
My camera bag now contains an Nikon D800E, Nikon 24-70 / f2.8, 70-200 / f2.8, wide angle 18-35mm / f3.5, and a 2x teleconverter to be able to go in tight with the 70-200mm. Depending on where I'm shooting, I may include my 60mm / f2.8 Macro. For filters, I always carry a circular polarizer, and a set of Lee filters: a soft graduated ND, a hard ND and a big stopper. I also have several sets of memory cards 64G and 32G, several extra batteries, lens clothes, a small air blower and allen wrenches for my tripod and tripod brackets.Feedback
It's about being at the right place at the right time in terms of light and scenery. For landscape photographer, if you want the best light, find a way to get to the place well before sunrise. I find it hardest when the alarm goes off, but I am always grateful that I got out to shoot. For me, there is nothing better than watching the landscape before me light up with the dawn of the new day. In Bagan, it Is worth hiring a local guide or photography to help you find the right place, and to help get you there at the right time.
