Were you lucky enough to happen on it at that time, or did you wait for the shadows to get right?

I saw it from daughters apartment and had a hunch. Watched it for two days and figured it out.. so I guess the answer is .. I waited. Glad you liked it, makes the wait worth it Wendy!

Fire escapes and shadows—my very favorite(s). This is an amazing NYC shot. Hold onto it- NYC will never b the same, hélas.

Merci. A timing and labor of love :-) At the VERY bottom of this page, is Behind the Lens, which goes into more detail. Again, thanks!

Behind The Lens
Location
The Upper West Side in New York City provided this image when visiting my daughter in July of 2016. It was right out her window on the 4rd story walk upTime
It was around 11am when the shadows and the structure I had been watching for days so aligned. Hot! it was a hot summer day and I had opened the window to avoid the wavy part of vintage window pane. All were happy when the creative bug flew away having fed :-) For a few days I had plotted the stretching web of shadows. After taking many images over a few days and different hours, this one spoke to me.Lighting
The light is all natural sunlight filtered only by the humidity and heatEquipment
I hand held my Sony A7m2 with a 24-240 lens while sitting in a chair with elbows locked into my sidesInspiration
I am a fan of symmetry. Now to be sure I use the Rule of 3rds but I consider it mainly to be good advice :-) The city, I wanted to capture something that said, "City", real people living real lives in a crowded environment. This image when I saw it, said safety, it said escape, it said order.Editing
The only post I did was convert to B&W using PS cc 2017 and some gamma tweaks. I am finally understanding, "get it right in camera"In my camera bag
I believe it travel light. I think the shot is in your heart, not in your equipment. I carry my Sony A7Rm2 with the 24-240 that never comes off. If shooting an event for a friend I bring my A7m2 with the kit lens. I do not own a strobe. I have a tripod I bring if handy and I think of ti but rarely rarely ever use it. Of course with a Sony, extra batteries and a polarizing filter which I have used onceFeedback
Want an awarded image? Then don't think about it. And carry your camera just about everywhere. 'See' rather than just look at the world around you. Let your eyes and your mind 'search'. It might be at your feet in a tiny crack, it might be in the shadows playing across a building, or the tint of an evening sky or special smile between two strangers on the street you see while sipping coffee at a cafe or the hard working men doing street repair and sweating it out in black and white. It has been said -and I wholeheartedly agree- "The meaning of life, lives within the verb 'seeing'. Good Hunting and thanks for reading this. If I can help, message me
