Behind The Lens
Location
I took this photo on my land. We have about 60 acres, so I get to take the majority of my outdoor photos right at home! This was taken just behind my house.Time
I took this photo about 2 hours before sunset. The sun was still high. We went to a very wooded area on my land so the majority of the area was in the shade. This is very common for me when I photograph my kids in the Spring and Summer, because my kids go to bed before the sun goes down. ;)Lighting
I wanted the light to enhance the feel of this happy image! The light was coming from his left and behind him, so I just intensified what was already occurring to increase the magic of the photo.Equipment
For this shot, I used the 5D Mark iii and my favorite lens, the Canon 70-200L. I just love the compression of that lens and the way it makes the subject pop!Inspiration
The inspiration for this shot, started with our new puppy. :) I wanted to get a super sweet photo of her with my son. I had just purchased the overalls for a different session and thought that they'd be perfect for a classic, country session with our puppy. I love using this wooden swing for so many different sessions, and I knew it would help with the joyful feel. My kids would swing on it all the time, and it instantly induces a smile. Bottom line, child+puppy+wooden swing=a whole lotta happy! :)Editing
For post-processing on this image, I started by lightening the subject a bit and adding some contrast. I added a vignette to further draw the eye to my son. I added some saturation to the image as well as a slight radial blur. I finished it by adding a light gradient and a subtle light ray overlay. In my camera bag
In my bag, I keep my Canon 5D Mark iii, the 70-200L, 50L, and 35L. I also have my white balance target (a must-have), extra CF cards and an extra battery. And sometimes, I have some bubbles in there to bring out if the kids are not excited about the session. Bubbles usually turn that around! ;)Feedback
Part of what makes this image stand out is the way the subject really stands out from the background. A couple of key things making that happen are 1) having my subject far away from the background, and 2) choosing a long lens. Using the 70-200L closer to the 200 end really makes the subject stand out and have excellent separation from the background. That really draws the eye to my son and pup, letting the viewer focus on what I want them to see. :)
