I took this photo in March, 2016 on a blustery cold and windy day in Grand Haven, Michigan. The temperatures was in the 30's and the wind was blowing 25 to 30 MPH, and gusting to 40 MPH. I was hoping for a good sunset along with 30 to 40 others heavily dressed photographers as we waited for about an hour looking for the best place to place our cameras.Time
This photo was taken March 19, at 8:44 PM in the evening.Lighting
I was using a tripod and went to a number of positions as I moved a little to put the setting sun in the position that I wanted.Equipment
I was using my Canon EOS 5D mark 11 camera with a canon 2.8 24 -70mm lens and a canon 2.8, 70-200mm zoom lens. I also put on a Sigma 1.4 tele-converter for some shots. I used the shutter speed at different settings for many shots to enhance my sunset shot.Inspiration
I have taken many sunsets over the years in different locations, and I always liked the sunsets at the lakeshore of Lake Michigan either at Grand Haven or at Holland, Michigan shoreline.Editing
I used photoshop 5 to make this photo trying HDR and other photo enhancements with levels and other small image adjustments. In my camera bag
I have an assortment of lens from wide angle lens of canon 15mm to my canon 24 to 85mm 2.8 and my 70 to 200mm 2.8 telephoto lens. I also carry the sigma tele-converter for things I want to photograph a long ways from me or to compress some elements. A tripod is a must for many sunsets, especially when your shutter speeds become a longer time like a second or two seconds.Feedback
When at the shoreline in March in Michigan you must dress for the weather and usually at this time of the year it is bitter cold at Dusk and after, especially when the Winter winds are blowing. It is difficult to be patient waiting for that beautiful sunset if you are cold and shaking. It is always good to plan what you need when you have to park a long ways from where you are planning to take your photos. And be early for some locations fill up with other people wanting to take that same photo you are and grab the best locations.
