This fellow Steve was a model at a lighting workshop, and had several different period outfits a revolutionary citizen, a Civil War soldier, Christopher Columbus and a sailor from the Constellation. And on top of all that, I am sure he has his own memories and history. I may never know it, but it may be the most fascinating one of all.

Thank you! I do far more landscapes than portraits. It is an area I would like to spend more time on.

I think you're rght, Ben. An image that leads one to want to know the story and history, is an opening to an intriguing place.

Thank you! He was at that point just reflecting, not modeling. Class was on a break

Location
This was taken during a lighting workshop held at the Delaplaines Visual Arts Center in Frederick, Maryland. We were in between shooting sessions trying various light sources and set ups, and the model was lost in contemplation for a moment as a another set up was being worked on. I saw the distant look and grabbed the shot.Time
It was in the studio, so time gets suspended, right? But actually it was about 2:30 in the afternoon.Lighting
An east facing window to the right of the imageEquipment
Canon 6D, 85mm Canon 1.8Inspiration
This model had several different costume changes for different historical periods. He was patiently sitting while lighting setups were being changed. The light on his face was so perfect, and that I took the shot from where I was sitting on a platform - so no great time for composition & the like.Editing
The background was a typical green chalkboard, and the studio walls are an institutional cream color, with a register in the wall. Because it was a spontaneous shot, not a lot of time to compose to exclude the register and background - catching the moment was more important than juggling the composition or trying to move the model intentionally. Processed the image in SilverEfex with some blur on the register. The B&W in my opinion, makes the most of the subject and gives is a greater sense of time period. In my camera bag
Typically, a Canon 6D or 5DMKIII, and Canon 16-35, 24-105, often an old Canon 35-350, and a 580EXII.Feedback
The sticking point lesson for me was to pay attention for the un-intended, un-posed shot in the midst of other activityes, to capture the moment, and not focus on the technicalities.
