Behind The Lens

Location

Phot was taken from the balcony of my apartment in Podgorica, Montenegro, on a particulary rainy late evening.

Time

It was very late evening, sometimes around 11:00PM, with some heavy raining outside. I was at my balcony, with camera, when the opportunity for shot appeared.

Lighting

I used no additional lighting except for the light produced by the parking car, not visible in the photo. I used its headlights as a lighting source to emphasize the rain drops on the street and on other parked cars in the parking lot. In order to capture the rain drops trails I had to use a ISO 1000 value, because of the lens aperture limitation to only 5.6 on the 300mm end.I was pleased to see that higher ISO gave additional "vintage" to the photo.

Equipment

It was shot using Nikon D7100 camera with Nikkor 55-300mm 1:4.5-5.6G lens, with no other equipment used.

Inspiration

I was on my balcony, with my camera, looking at the falling rain, trying to capture a rain drops and its trails in the street lights light, when I saw the opportunity created by the car parking in the parking lot below my balcony. I quickly decided to use the car headlights as a source of light I was looking for, so I took the photo, few secnds before the driver killed the lights. I simply wanted to make a photo of a heavy rain, and I was so lucky that I grabbed the moment that appeared out of nothing.

Editing

Since I decided to make a black and white photo from the start, post processing was done only in a matter of adjusting the highlights and shadows, with some corrections of the dark tones in the photo. Slight exposure yuning was done, in order to get the photo a bit lighter.

In my camera bag

Since I am mostly a nature and landscape amateur photographer, I usually carry around Nikon D7100 with Nikkor 16-85mm f/1:3.5-56G VR and Nikkor 55-300mm f/1:4.5-56G VR lens, and Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 prime lens tripod, some filters and remote. These are all DX lenses, since I use the DX sensor camera, and they cover almost everything I came upon during my photo trips. Also, when I want to experiment with some plant macros, I carry Tamron 60mm f/2 1:1 macro lens.

Feedback

Rainy nights in the city are so full of photo opportunities. You don't have to wait for a photo standing on a balcony, like I did in this case, but take the streets and hunt the shots. Some fixed focal lenght lens, with wide aperture is a must, so you can take photos with lower ISO values and get less noise in the photos as a result. Protect your gear from the rain, get some nice waterproof clothes and footwear, and roam the rainy streets for a valuable reward in photos you will really be proud of. Like I am proud of this particular one.
