Behind The Lens

Location

Photo was taken in small fishing settlement of Rijeka Crnojevica in Montenegro. It is the photo of the Old bridge, built in 1853, by the Montenegrin Prince Danilo, dedicated to the memory of his father.

Time

I came to the location at about 8:30pm. I set up my gear, and by that time, there were no people around, so it was a perfect opportunity to snap the photo of the Old bridge. It was pretty much dark, being an early spring and the day was still prety short.

Lighting

The waters of the river below the bridge were perfectly calm, and the bridge itself was pretty nicely illuminated by the lights installed under its arches. Light reflected from the calm water perfectly, so I used no additional lighting, just took the photo with the lights that were already there.

Equipment

Photo was taken using Nikon D7100 camera with Nikkor 16-85mm f/1:3.5-56G VR lens, tripod and a IR remote.

Inspiration

I shot the bridge many times during the day, but never tried to take the photo of it by night. So, when I came to the location, and saw the bridge illuminated by the reflection of its lights from the water surface, it seemed like it was floating above the water, with its perfect image mirrored in the water. Lighting was perfect, I was lucky to have no ripples or waves on the water surface, and it would be insane to miss the opportuinty.

Editing

I converted the image to black and white, to emphasize the light on the old stones of the bridge and the reflection of the bridge in glass calm water of the river. It gave a really nice contrast to the whole scene, and I just adjusted highlights and shadows on the photo, to avoid the light or dark burnout parts on the photo, played a bit with the tone curve, just to enhance the contrast between light and dark, and it was done :)

In my camera bag

Since I am mostly a nature and landscape amateur photographer, I usually carry around Nikon D7100 with Nikkor 16-85mm f/1:3.5-56G VR and Nikkor 55-300mm f/1:4.5-56G VR lens, and Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 prime lens tripod, some filters and remote. These are all DX lenses, since I use the DX sensor camera, and they cover almost everything I came upon during my photo trips. Also, when I want to experiment with some plant macros, I carry Tamron 60mm f/2 1:1 macro lens. And a few sandwiches, of course.

Feedback

Bridges are nice, because they come in all the variety of shapes and design. Old or new, they are impressive by their purpose itself, spanning across the waters, magnificent to behold. Most important of all, bridges are almost always easily accessible, so you can plan your trips, wait for the perfect weather, or perfect time of day, and make a photo you seek. It is all up to you. And the bridge.
