Location
This photo was taken in one of the fields I worked in during the summer. I'm lucky enough to work outside most of the year and for a plant breeding company.Time
It was just after noon and one of the last really hot days during harvest.Lighting
It had been a clear blue sky earlier in the day but it had clouded over with very thin, hazy clouds. It's not my most favourite time of day to photograph, but I wanted to try and make the most of the combine harvester.Equipment
I'm a big fan of bridge cameras for one reason or another so I used my Panasonic Lumix FZ1000. No other equipment apart from my knee to rest my elbow on.Inspiration
I'm fortunate enough through work to get very close to farm machinery, especially combines. I love the harvest time of year and really enjoy the mechanical side of the harvest. Bales and beautiful sun drenched landscapes are spectacular but I like to try and photograph the more hands on side of the period. With this shot I wanted to try and capture the wheat in the foreground and the blur of the combine in the distance to give a sense of the impending cut and to add a little depth.Editing
I try to keep the post-processing to an absolute minimum so there was little levelling off of the shot and some slight cropping. I'm not a fan of over processing as I prefer to capture a moment as it is without adding or taking away too much afterwards. In my camera bag
I have a very meagre camera bag which consists of a couple of filters and a Raynox dcr250 macro lens.Feedback
The advice I would give is to try for lots of different angles but make sure you can get away from the machinery in time if it's vehicular machinery. As I've mentioned I'm very lucky to be able to get close to tractors and combine harvesters through work, but don't be afraid to ask a farer if you want to get some close up shots. They can be very accommodating.
