Behind The Lens

Location

This was a studio for hire in Bay City, MI, but un fortunately it is no longer available.

Time

Oddly it was taken in the afternoon, soft daylight filled the room, and the night time effects were all created with my vintage version of Photoshop 7. I did a lot of different selections to create the illusion of a night time thunderstorm. For insurance reasons NO open flames or candles were allowed. The white saucers served as place holders, and the lit candles were shot much later in my home studio, in the proper perspective to be added.

Lighting

As mentioned above, this was shot in soft daylight, the illusion of night during a thunderstorm, and all the lit candles were dropped in as Photoshop layers. 1 studio strobe of 200 watts through a white umbrella, made sure key areas had enough fill light.

Equipment

A basic Canon DSLR with a wide angle zoom lens. a 200 watt strobe through a white umbrella. I had to lift my camera tripod onto a higher box to get added height, and use a short stepladder to see the viewfinder.

Inspiration

I love to tell a good story. The concept was discussed with the model, and the Tarot cards, candles and her costume were all purchased or collected weeks in advance. A friend and I had agreed to rent the studio space for a half day, and it was a scramble to complete many concepts in a limited time. The model shot with my friend elsewhere while I created this set in her absence.

Editing

This shot is primarily post processing. I arranged the props while going back and forth from my camera fixed on a high tripod, and I did call the model in several times for a few minutes as I set it up, to be sure her position and perspective matched my vision for the concept.Selective level adjustments converted each area from soft daylight to a night time thunderstorm.

In my camera bag

Already mentioned above, I try to get professional results using affordable budget equipment.

Feedback

Of course you will want to get as many of the details "in camera", this concept pushed my limits with my years of experience and illustration with Photoshop.
