I'm assuming this is a composite - as the planes appear to be little artificial on the explosion - I think you need to blend them in a bit more - as it is, it makes a striking image, and is pretty effective. I would be tempted to zoom it in a bit, or make the planes a bit larger, and maybe brighten them up a bit, as the leading plane is disappearing into the background a bit.

Location
I took this photo at Avalon Air show this is a Air show near Melbourne Australia held every two years.Time
It was shot at about 5p.m in March which is our most stable month of the year.Lighting
The sun was but still low but good lighting so I was able to keep my shutter speed high, sun was to the west so perfect for shooting such a shot.Equipment
I used a canon 7D, with a 70 -300 L lens.Hand Held as I try not to use a Tripod as much as possible. .Inspiration
I was inspired to take this photo as its such exciting event things happening all around you its just a matter of keeping your eye and camera ready.Editing
I used photo shop to enhance colour detail and cropping .In my camera bag
I try and travel as light as possible many times only taking two lens I always have my 70-300L lens and 24-70. I travel with my manfrotto tripod when required.Feedback
Look for events that produce action, surfing Air shows car, bikes whatever looks fast and exciting. Buy the best lens you can afford find yourself a good sturdy position that you may be able to stable yourself or camera in this case it was a fence. Have your equipment clean and ready to go. Use good light if possible high shutter speed to capture the action , but above all have fun thats what its all about.
