Location
On a trip to the Loire Valley in France we visited the Zoo Parc de Beauval, primarily to see their Giant Pandas. This rhino was just one of the other lovely animals in the zoo - one of the best I have visited.Time
In the middle of the day.Lighting
Natural light on a crisp, late Spring day, sun high in the sky.Equipment
Canon EOS 40D and Sigma 18-200mm lensInspiration
As I haven't yet been lucky enough to go on safari to see these amazing creatures in the wild, I take every opportunity I can to visit zoos and support them with their conservation efforts, taking photos of their beautiful animals.Editing
This image was converted to black and white to focus the viewer on the textures of the skin. The background was also removed to concentrate the viewer on the rhino and remove any distractions. In my camera bag
The 40D has been retired and now used as an emergency backup, replaced by a Canon EOS 7D. Canon and Sigma lenses accompany the camera.Feedback
Modern zoos are wonderful places to see some of the most critically endangered and rare animals and a good place to practice wildlife photography. Visiting them helps them fund conservation work in the animals' natural environments so every visit helps protect and support these magnificent creatures as well as given you, the photographer, the opportunity to get some great images.
