Behind The Lens

Location

I created this image during a holiday to Far North Queensland, in lovely boutique hotel at Airlie Beach, Queensland.

Time

The time of day for this image is completely irrelevant. This is an inside shoot with heavy curtains pulled to blocked out most of the light from outside. It was typical hot sunny Queensland day outside.

Lighting

The lighting is a bit unconventional, I've had mixed reviews of this image. Thank you so much for picking it as a favourite. I was looking for the dramatic partially shadowed face along with some pattern created by the light coming through her hair. There are two off-camera flash units set up in butterfly style but placed a bit further to the back of the scene.

Equipment

I've been shooting with a Canon 7D MKII, I think it had only been available to buy for a week when I got it. The lens is a Canon 16-35mm 2.8L II, along with 2 Canon 600EX RT speedlights (on small manfrotto tripods) triggered remotely with a ST-E3-RT.

Inspiration

Hey, my inspiration was spending the day with my daughter. I can't say that she loves to pose for me, but she needed some other head shots for a resume (while I was handy and visiting). So the price you pay for needing to get in front of my camera is, you will usually have to model for a bit longer than you expected.

Editing

All of my images get some kind of post processing treatment. I learned photography in the darkroom era, we did it then, only it was a little bit different. Its been almost 2 years since I edited this image, I would have processed the raw image out to have much detail as possible and then went from there. At the end I added a Jessica Drossin texture overlay. Sorry, I can't share more with diving into the archives and pulling it out.

In my camera bag

I've repacked my bag recently, I'm trying something different for awhile. I have multiple camera bags with lots of toys but what I am carrying with me today is. The brand new Peak Design Everyday Tote. (I didn't think a tote bag was for me, but this one really is) Inside is, Canon 7D MKII with a 16-35mm 2.8L II attached, Canon EF 100mm 2.8 macro, tiny Joby bendy tripod, Datacolor SpyderCube, dust brush, Hahnel Combi TF, 2 spare batteries, 82mm +10 ND filter, 1 LumeCube, Polaroid 195 Land Camera (the sad day is coming when I don't have film for this anymore), Portrait filter and goggles for the 195, lens cleaning fluid, lens tissues, cotton tips. There you have it, my modern bag filled with a blend of old and new world photography toys

Feedback

My best advice is to never stop learning, and never give up.
