Behind The Lens

Location

Denver University in Denver, Colorado

Time

Around 2 p.m.

Lighting

The gymnast was being lit by a single theater spotlight above and to the right of the subject. It was shot indoors in the ice arena during practice for an ice show in which the gymnast were participating.

Equipment

Nikon D100 and a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens on a monopod.

Inspiration

I loved the lighting and the position of the gymnast. She had to redo her part 3 times during practice, I noticed the first time and was able to shoot it twice to get what I wanted.

Editing

I converted the image to B&W and boosted the contrast.

In my camera bag

2-Nikon D90's, an 85mm f1.4 Nikkor lens; 18-75mm f/3.5-5.6 kit Nikkor lens; 70-200 f/2.8 Nikkor lens; 50mm 1.4 Nikkor lens; 2-SB 700 flash units and various batteries, cards, etc.

Feedback

I was shooting this ice show for the DU skating club, they performed 3 shows. I was allowed to go to both dress rehearsals before the show. If you are able to get into a rehearsal it is immensely helpful so you can anticipate the action and movements of the participants for the main shoot. I shot this during rehersal, so always be prepared, you never know when you might find a great shot.
