Location
This was taken at Stonhenge in the UKTime
It was taken just as the sun was setting for the day!Lighting
We had planned to visit Stonehenge the following day but as we were driving along the road that runs past it the sun was setting beautifully and the sky was amazing so we decided to visit right then and not wait till the following day. This paid dividends as the sun was low enough to shine through the rocks and had we waited till the following day we would have had a dull grey rainy sky.Equipment
This shot was taken on a Canon 7D with a Tamron 24-70mm VC. The exposure had a shutter speed of 1/50 (VC in the lens helped out here) at f/11.0 at ISO 200.Inspiration
Stonehenge is one of the wonders of the world but all you can do is walk around it. Luckily the sun was setting and as i was walkign around I could see the sun flicking through the open stones. I thought this would make an interesting shot. Being a popular tourist spot it was going to be hard to get a shot without people in the image so instead of waiting for them all to go I decided to see if i could use them to give the structure a sense of scale. Two people were looking at the structure and I felt that it added some interesting features to the photo. The one thing i wanted with this shot was something that was a little bit different to ALL the other photos you see of this monument. This was going to be hard but luckily for me the light was on my side and it allowed me to get low and be creative.Editing
I punched the saturation a bit on individual colors, mainly the blues and green and changed the highlights and shadows to add contrast to the clouds in the sky.In my camera bag
I usually carry a Canon 7D, Canon G12 and a GoPro Hero 2. I always try and have one of my vintage film cameras with too but I have to many to list here. My lenses consisit of the following: Canon 50mm f/1.4 Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 VC I also carry my CPL and various ND filters as well an intevelometer for my night shots and Time lapse videos that i like to shoot. I also carry either my 3 Legged Thing Brian or Gorrilapod Focus depending on where I am going and what kind of shots I need to get.Feedback
I like to travel a lot and visit a lot of places classed as touristy. When photographing these locations you are always told to try and find a unique angle and nothing could be more true. Finding a new angle doesn't just mean moving around though, it involves looking for a different foreground element or using the light creatively. Maybe get low or get a high viewpoint. When at these locations I like to work quickly just so that you are maximising the potential opportunities. The natural thought is to take a photo of the subject without tourists and yes whilst this is nice its not always possible, therefore don't try and exclude them instead try and make a feature of them. One thing I always try and do though is to not get disappointed when a photo doesn't quite make the grade, you can't always win them all so make sure that whilst you want to photograph the location that you don't fail to actually enjoy the moment of being there, don't let the camera get in the way of a moment.
